Quick teriyaki beef donburi

Easy: 7 steps, 13 minutes

You can buy thin beaf slices in some grocery shops or butchers. They may be called minute steaks or quick steaks and are a great ingredient that you can use to make a quick donburi (a rice bowl with meat and vegetable toppings). It's so fast to prepare, that you can do everything in the time it takes to cook the rice!

Step #1: Ingredients

For each portion you will require:

  • 1.5 or 2 slices of beef quick steaks,
  • 1 carrot,
  • 2 shallots,
  • 1 cup of rice,
  • 2 spoons of oil,
  • teriyaki sauce,
  • a piece of white radish (or daikon radish),
  • herbs.

Step #2: Utensils

You will need a heavy-bottomed pan, metal or glass bowl, and a rice cooker or a pan, and a grater.

Step #3: Marinade the beef (2 minutes)

Place the meat in the metal or glass bowl, then pour some teriyaki marinade or sauce (2-3 spoons) over the beef and distribute it evenly all over. Set aside to marinade.

Step #4: Cook the rice (3 minutes)

Wash the rice and cook in a rice cooker or a pot, following appropriate instructions. The rice will cook while you do everything else.

Step #5: Prepare vegetables (2 minutes)

Cut a small portion of white radish and grate it using the smallest size grater.

Slice each carrot into quarters, then cut into matchsticks and small cubes.

Cut each shallot in half, then each piece into long slices.

Step #6: Fry the meat (5 minutes)

Heat the pot on a high heat, then add oil. When hot, place each slice of meat on the pan and reduce heat to medium. Let the meat brown, stirring to avoid burning the sauce, then flip.

Let it brown for 1 minute, stirring, then add vegetables: carrot and onion. Fry for a minute or two, and then remove meat on a separate plate.

Reduce the heat to low, sprinkle with herbs and stir, then cover the pan.

Step #7: Serving (1 minute)

When the rice is cooked, fill each donburi bowl with it, while still hot.

Place the cooked beef over the rice, and then surround with cooked carrot and shallots. You can garnish the meat with grated white radish, and serve immediately!
