Fancy tamagoyaki bento

Easy: 6 steps, 22 minutes

Oh my, this one is both a looker and tastes amazingly! :-) This bento idea is based on the basic tamagoyaki recipe, so feel free to use your favorite ingredients: champignons or chanterelle mushroom, herbs, different kinds of onion, bacon bits, ham shavings etc. Go crazy! :-) It's also a very good side dish!

Step #1: Ingredients

Ingredients for tamagoyaki:

  • 4 eggs,
  • 1/4 teaspoon of white sugar,
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt,
  • 1/4 teaspon of soy sauce,
  • 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil,
  • 2 spoons of finely chopped carrot,
  • 2 spoons of finely chopped shallots (or onions).

Ingredients for bento:

  • 1 cup of rice,
  • lettuce leaves,
  • tomato,
  • cucumber,
  • herbs.

Ingredients for furikake (rice sprinkles):

  • 1 teaspoon of red pepper,
  • 1 teaspoon of chopped garlic,
  • 1 spoon of shredded nori seawed (or just sliced into very thin strips),
  • 1 teaspoon of sesame seeds.

Step #2: Utensils

  • Bento box,
  • Rice cooker,
  • Mixing bowl,
  • Frying pan.

Step #3: Cook rice (10 minutes)

Wash and cook rice in a rice cooker or a pot. You can see the way I prepare tasty and fluffy rice for my bentos in the video:

You can prepare other ingredients while rice cooks, then fill the rice container with hot rice.

Step #4: Prepare tamagoyaki (6 minutes)

Finely chop 2 spoons of carrot, and 2 spoons of shallots (or other ingredients that you like) and following the basic tamagoyaki recipe, just add them to the tamagoyaki batter. Simple as that!

Step #5: Assemble bento (5 minutes)

Wash, dry and shred the lettuce, then fill one of the bento containers with it, leaving some space for tamagoyaki (it shouldn't be placed on lettuce!).

Wash, dry and slice tomato and cucumber, then place everything on the side of salad container.

Place tamagoyaki on the side, and arrange nicely.

Step #6: Prepare furikake (1 minute)

Dry the frying pan with a paper towel and set the high heat.

Place nori seaweed strips and toast them for few seconds, then add rest of the ingredients and quickly warm up until aromatic on the high heat (around 30-60 seconds should be enough).

Sprinkle your rice with the aromatic furikake and close the container.
